WHY GIVE THANKS?

images (1)

O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalms 107:1, KJV)

The story was told of an woman who would always go out every single Sunday during testimony time to tell the same testimony every time; “brothers and sisters, please thank God with me, I woke up today and I can eat.”

This went on for some time and the pastor became irritated and order that the microphone be switched off whenever it was her turn to testify. Not long afterwards, the pastor fell sick and was admitted. One day, the old woman went to visit him in the hospital and the first question she innocently asked was “hope you have eaten?” And the pastor started crying because he had not been able to eat for days. He then realised that indeed, it is not in ones own ability to eat but by God’s grace.

What has God done for you that you have overlooked, thinking it is within your power to do it?

Lamentation 3:23 says it is by God’s mercies that we have not been consumed because His compassion never fails! (Paraphrased)

Perhaps you are saying to yourself “I have no reason to give thanks because another month has ended without result”. Have you considered the fact that you are still alive after Ten (10) months in this year?

A lot of people desire to be alive today but they are no more so give thanks!

A few years ago, a sister in our church testified of how she got up from bed to urinate at night but couldn’t pass out anything yet she was pressed, so she was rushed to a hospital where she was billed almost Sixty Thousand Naira (#60,000), just to pass her urine, then it dawned on her that God has indeed been faithful.

WHY MUST WE GIVE THANKS? 1. For what He did in time past – Psalm 103:3 – 4, Colossians 1:12-14 He forgave you, healed you and delivered you from destruction.

2. For what He is doing – Psalm 103:5 He Provides for your all round needs.

3. For what He will do – Philippians 4:19 If He did it before, be sure He will yet do it again.

4. For what He didn’t do – Jeremiah 1:5 He knew you before you were even conceived so He knows what’s best for you per time.

5. For what He is not doing – Jeremiah 29:11. He knows the perfect time to act on your behalf in line with His perfect will for you.

6. For what He will not do – Isaiah 46:10 God knows the end from the beginning, in effect, He knows that certain things we want will certainly not do us good.

The Bible says it is by God’s mercies that we are not consumed, and among other things, we must give thanks for His mercy.

Dear friends, it sounds pretty stupid to thank God for what He didn’t do and for what He will not do, but be rest assured that He knows more than we can ever know, and if He does those things we want Him to do for us against His will, they will destroy us and that is not His desire for us, so to spare our lives He decided to ignore them.

Would it make sense if your twelve (12) years old child says he wants to drive to town and as such you must surrender your car keys? That would be a suicide mission and the best thing to do would be to deny his request; that’s God for you.

It is said that if you thank God for His finger you will see His Hand and if you thank Him for His Hand you will see His outstretched Hands, so instead of murmuring, thank Him for His Hand and you will see His outstretched Hands in your life, in Jesus Mighty Name!

It is well with you!
