WHAT IS IN A NAME?

Whats-in-a-Name

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21, KJV)

Names are words or set of words by which a person or thing is known, addressed, or referred to. In other words, your name is your identity.

In 2007 I met a young man that called himself “sympathy”, when I asked if he knew what the meaning is, he said no, yet he chose to be called by it.

It is said in Urhobo language that the name of a thief is also his family name because when people see the siblings or parents of a thief, they say; that is the brother, sister, mother or father of that thief.

In 1 Chronicles 4 verses 9 and 10, the Bible speaks about a man called Jabez; meaning sorrow:

“And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.”

You can imagine the pain in his heart for being called such a name. At home, his parents would say “sorrow come and eat”. In school, sorrow let’s go out and play football. What a name!

But in verse 10, the young man prayed that God should not allow the name bear root in his life, and God heard him, blessed him and enlarged his coast.

I don’t know what name men has been calling you, but today, that same God that answered Jabez will change your name, in Jesus Name!

Names are very important to God, that is why the Bible says in Proverbs 22:1:

“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches…”

God had to change the names of certain individuals before they could fulfil their purposes in life.

Today we all claim to be children of Abraham because God changed it from Abram to Abraham.

“Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.” – Genesis 16:5

In Genesis chapter 17 from verse 15 to 17 and in chapter 18 verse 12, neither Abraham nor Sarah believed they could bear any child so they laughed when God said they would. But God being God, had to changed their names in other to align their hearts to their purposes in life.

Also, the greatness of Jacob was predicted in Genesis 25:23 before his birth but the name he was given, Jacob, followed him so he swindled his elder brother, Esau, stole his blessings and fled. But for his purpose to be made manifest, God had to change his name and one of the greatest nations on earth, if not the greatest, was born – Genesis 32:28.

Our reading says a virgin shall bear a child who will save His people from their sins. Guess what. It was fore told decades even before the mother of Jesus was born.

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;” – Isaiah 61:1

So when Jesus discovered it in Luke 4:18, He declared it to them in verse 21:

“… This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

And verse 22 says they all bare Him witness; they confirmed it to be true.

I don’t know what your name means, what negativity it has brought to you, or what name men has called you that has stuck on you, but I do know a God that specialises in changing the names of people to suit His purpose.

Therefore, I decree, in the Name that His above all other names, your name is changing today! And even the blessed shall call you blessed from now on, in Jesus Mighty Name!

YOU ARE BLESSED!

It is well with you!
