Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. (Colossians 4:6, KJV)
It is true about the saying that says; “talk when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.” It is also true that the best time to talk is not when the tempers are high, no matter how right we think we are or how hurt we may be. Many a times when we are offended or feel we have been hurt, we tend to want to express ourselves or try defend our actions and most often we end up making things worse. It is a known fact that when emotions are battered we are most likely to loss control, that is why it is advised not to respond, else things may get out of proportion. A man of God once said it is important for us to first examine what we say before we say them. He went further to say “there is what to say, how to say it and when to say it.” He also added that it is very important for one to first examine with one’s self as being the supposed receiver. That way one would be able to know how the receiver would feel after we say what we want to say. But this is not so, as often times we feel we are right, perhaps we are, but after speaking our minds, as we claim, we end up battering someone else’s, and then we realise and say we are sorry.
The above passage says… that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Which means there are different ways to respond to certain things, not putting ourselves first.
Besides being angry or offended, it is also important we watch our slang processes as not everyone likes to be communicated with using slang words. Indeed slang coinage process in a process that evolves with time, but not everyone likes to use them or be communicated with using slang.
The above passage also says; Let your speech be alway with grace… Which means it should be such that is generally acceptable. No wonder Paul said in 1 Corinthians 8:13;
Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.
Which means there are times we withdraw from doing what we want just to ensure someone else is happy, especially when our withdrawal does not pose any threat nor affect anyone.
Today, as you go about your day, try to call to mind the fact that you are dealing with different individuals with different orientations and as you do, I pray the Lord grants you the wisdom to season your words with grace, in Jesus name!
