Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Colossians 1:12-13, KJV)
Discussing who Saints are have been a topical issue for centuries and theologians have divergent views to who Saints are. I will not say I have the answer(s) to who they are, but with a few definitions and Bible references, we may be able to get a glimpse of who Saints are.
Put simply, Saints are those who follow Jesus Christ and live their lives according to his teachings. A sinner is a transgressor. Someone who acts in violation of the law. Who goes beyond the limits or boundaries set by an authority.
If the above is true, does it then follow that Saints are sinless and perfect people?
No! The Bible, God’s Word says we have all sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23)
And 1 John 1:8 says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”
According to our reading, God has made us partakers of the inheritance of “SAINTS” in light when we accepted Jesus Christ into our lives. And Hebrews 10:26 says something captivating;
For if we sin willfully after having received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
So one distinct difference between a Saint and a sinner is the fact that a Saint does not sin willfully but a sinner purposes to do so. Whereas a Saint consciously avoids sin and tries to be like Christ, a sinner finds nothing wrong in indulging in sin.
In Romans 7:19-24 Apostle Paul cried that those things he does not want to do are those he did. But finally he said “I thank God through Jesus Christ…”
Sin irritates the Saints while it is pleasant to sinners!
A Saint is therefore not that man or woman who goes to church daily or a church worker who engages in secret sin and pretends to be holy on Sunday. Nor the one that claims to be one, but that man or woman… who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)
We are therefore Saints when we put off our old self and walk in the newness of the life we have received through Christ! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Who then are you; a Saint or a Sinner?
It is well!
