Text: “Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
It is vital for us to know that prayer is a command of authority and to pray is also a command. What does this mean? We exercise command when we pray, also we were commanded to pray. So to pray is not by choice but by divine order. We also pray to reverence and appreciate God for all He has done, for what He is doing and for what He is yet to do. Even for those He didn’t do and for those He won’t do. Prayer is a channel of communication between man and the spirits.
Spirit here does not mean the Lord Almighty alone because other religious practices also chant incantations to their gods and they believe its a form of prayer. Demons and evil spirits are invoked in such a process.
As believers, what then is prayer? Prayer is a solemn request for help or an expression of thanks addressed to God. – Mark 11:24, Philippians 4:6.
A great man of God by name Bishop David Abioye once said and I quote: Life is not funfare, life is warfare.”
Life indeed is a battle field that’s why the word of God says in 2 Corinthians 10:4 – 6;
“( For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; ) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”
We can not successfully go through life if our lives lack prayers.
Prayers is likened to multivitamins for the soul. We reactivate and re-energise our spirit man when we pray.
Brother Daniel knew the importance of prayers and never wasted a moment without praying:
“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.” (Daniel 6:10)
Why should we pray? 1. We must pray because Jesus prayed, and since Jesus Christ is our standard, we must pray. Luke 5:16, John 17:20 – 23.
2. As earlier noted, prayer is a command as recorded in 1 Thes. 5:17.
3. We pray to bring our petitions to God through prayers. Eph. 6:19, Col. 1:3, Rom. 1:9, 2 Tim. 1:3 and Phil 4.6.
4. We pray because life is a battle field. 2 Cor. 4:6, Eph. 1:18 – 22, Eph 2:5-7.
When do we pray? We “MUST” pray always. 1 Thes. 5:17, Eph. 6:18 and Luke 18:1.
It is note worthy to say God does not hear just any prayer but the prayers of His children. How did I know? The bible says:
“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” (Proverbs 28:9)
We must have a personal relationship with God for Him to hear us. So if you’re not born again, you must first build a relationship with Him.
Why not say this prayer:
Father! I’m a sinner and can not save myself. Lord, I need your help. Save me, cleanse me with the blood of the Lamb and make me whole. I surrender my life to the Lordship of Jesus today. Use me for your glory in Jesus name!
CONGRATULATIONS if you said that prayer because its the best decision of your life you’ve made today.
