He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3, KJV)
The tongue is one of the smallest part of our body and the mouth would be almost useless without the tongue because the absence of it makes one lack audible communication. The fulfilment of our destiny is tired to the tongue, and to control the tongue, we must subject it to God’s Word.
HOW TO CONTROL THE TONGUE. 1. Reeducate your mind with God’s Word. – Romans 12:2, Matthew 12:33 – 35. Only God’s Word has the capacity to regenerated our minds. Proverbs 15:2, Proverbs 16:23.
2. Think before you talk. A lot of times people talk before they think instead of thinking before they talk. Proverbs 17:28, Proverbs 21:23. Remember you will account for every word you speak. Matthew 12:36 – 37.
3. Avoid strife. People often get themselves in trouble because they want to make a point or prove to be right and they end up regretting instead. Proverbs 17:19 says
“Whoever loves transgression loves strife…” Arguments are not necessary because they do more harm than good. Ecclesiates 5:6 says Angels do not assume so becareful of what you say and avoid strife!
4. Engage the tongue in prayer God hears and answers prayer so it is wisdom to pray rather than engage in idle talks. 1 Peter 3:12, Luke 18:1 and 1 Thes. 5:17.
5. Praise God. A lot of people enjoy idle talks but rather than waste time, use it to praise God. Hebrews 13:15 says we should offer sacrifices of praise continually with the fruit of our lips giving thanks to God.
6. Bless others rather than curse or gossip them. Proverbs 16:24, Proverbs 18:21. 1 Peter 3:10 sums it all up:
“For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.”
So when next you want to engage your tongue, remember…
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”
It is well with you!
